Australia provides a unique kind of education and a learning style that encourages you to be innovative, creative and think independently. Australia attracts the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world after the USA and UK. In some countries Australia is the students’ first choice study destination.

Australia offers an education experience that makes a real difference. Graduates from Australia are very successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. Additionally, they are readily accepted for postgraduate study at leading international universities.

Budget

International students are charged up-front tuition fees in Australia. These fees are very affordable and are consistently less expensive than in the UK or USA. Some institutions make an additional charge to cover other student costs. These may include student organization membership, library and laboratory costs and sports facility costs. These costs will vary depending on the concerned course or institution. The average costs are provided below and should only be used as a guide. Institutions will advise you how to pay and when to pay your tuition fees.

Entry Requirement

Undergraduate Undergraduate courses require an Australian Senior School Certificate of Education (Year 12 completion from Nepal) or the overseas equivalent of Australian high school matriculation, such as three passes at GCE A Levels in appropriate subjects. Some courses may also have certain pre-requisite subjects.

Postgraduate Entry to postgraduate courses requires satisfactory completion of a first degree at undergraduate level (Bachelors). Demonstrated research ability or relevant work experience may also be taken into consideration Evidence of English language proficiency is required when applying for a student visa. Depending on your proposed study sector you will need to have a minimum score of 6.0 in the IELTS English test.

Part Time Work

International students studying in Australia on a student visa can apply for permission to work once they commence their course. A visa with permission to work enables you to work up to 20 hours a week on a casual basis during course time and full-time during vacation periods. In some cases family members can also apply for permission to work up to 20 hours a week throughout the year.

Most students take part-time or casual jobs at some time during their studies. Some jobs are closely tied to courses of study (such as formal cadetships and informal arrangements such as part-time work by law students in solicitors’ offices). Some students tutor school children or get jobs on campus in the canteen, the bookshop, in the institution’s offices and as laboratory assistants. Some jobs are entirely outside the education community such as bartending, babysitting, gardening, hospitality, sales, information technology, restaurants, checkout work or fruit picking.

Visa Procedure

There are three thousand educational institutions in the UK that offer thousands of courses at different levels of education, be it schools, colleges, further education, higher education or research institutions. Students have umpteen number of options to choose from. There is also great flexibility in the way in which a subject can be studied and it is often possible to incorporate different elements such as vocational, English language training, work placements into a specific programme of study. Conversion courses are very popular in the UK with international students as they allow students from a non related background to pursue their studies in a specific subject.

One of the biggest advantages of studying in the UK is that the option of combining work placements with academic study such as sandwich courses at the undergraduate level and work internships at the post graduate level. Having a work component weaved into the programme of study gives the students cutting edge knowledge and expertise as well as the hands on experience in your area of study, thereby strengthening chances of obtaining suitable employment later on.

Affordable Investment for the Future

You can be granted a student visa only if you wish to undertake a registered course or part of a registered course on a full-time basis. A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider who is registered with the Australian Government to offer courses to overseas students.

You may undertake any course of study for less than three months on a visitor visa or working holiday visa. If you intend to study for more than three months, you must apply for a student visa.

There are advantages to applying for a student visa. If you are studying on a student visa you: * have access to Australia’s subsidized student health cover * are able to study for more than three months * are generally able to change status to an overseas student in Australia, and * can also apply for permission to work.

Students wanting to study in Australia can apply for a student visa after they have received a letter of offer or electronic confirmation of enrolment (eCoE) in relation to one or more full-time courses of study. However, it is recommended that you do not enroll in your course or obtain an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) until you have been advised to do so by your local Australian Government office, i.e., Australian High Commission, New Delhi, India.

You should contact BIA to find out:

How to make your application, and what your document requirements will be.

Generally, an international student is issued with a multiple entry visa for the duration of their study course in Australia. This allows you to travel backwards and forwards to Australia within the period for which it has been granted. Members of your immediate family (spouse and unmarried dependent children under 18 years of age) may accompany you to Australia and will be considered in the same visa class as yourself. If you wish to extend your stay in Australia for further study you will need to lodge an application for a further visa.

International English Language Testing System

The IELTS is an English language assessment test used by institution around the world to evaluate the English language skills of international students. While IELTS scores are used mostly by universities in Australia and England, it is gaining acceptance at institution in the United States. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. that will accept IELTS for undergraduate admission only. Graduate programs may ask that you submit scores from the TOEFL, not the IELTS.

If you are unable to take the TOEFL in Nepal for any particular reason, the IELTS may be an option for you. However, make sure before hand that the colleges you are applying to will accept IELTS scores. The IELTS website has a search feature that will tell you which U.S. institutions accept the IELTS.

The IELTS test consists of four separate sections – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking section is administered separately, usually within a week of taking the other sections. IELTS scores range from 0-9, nine being the highest. American colleges that accept the IELTS usually require a minimum score of 6.5 for admission.

IELTS Quick Facts
1) The IELTS test is administered as a paper-based test by the British Council at Lainchaur, Kathmandu.
2) Testing is offered at least twice a month.
3) Students may also take the test in Pokhara, where testing is offered once every two months.
4) Registration for the test may be completed at the British Council itself.
5) The cost of taking the IELTS test in Nepal is comparable to what you would pay for the computer-based TOEFL.
6) Score reports are usually available two weeks after the written portion of the test.

Test of English as a Second Language

Description

The TOEFL measures the English proficiency of students whose native language is not English. Most undergraduate and graduate programs in the U.S require international applicants to submit scores from the TOEFL. The test is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS), an organization based in New Jersey, USA. In Nepal, the TOEFL has been offered as a computer –based test (CBT) at the USEF since 1998. As of 2006, the CBT is being phased out and will soon be replaced by a new version. The four sections on the CBT and their score ranges are:

1.	Listening Comprehension 0-30
2.	Structure/Writing 0-30
3.	Reading Comprehension 0-30
4.	Essay 0-6
5.	Total score 0-300

Most undergraduate programs require a minimum CBT score of 173 for unconditional admission. Graduate programs usually require a minimum score of 213.

Internet- based TOEFL

In the near future, ETS will introduce Nepali students to a new version of the TOEFL called the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT). The IBT was launched in the U.S. in 2005 and is now available in many countries around the world. Once launched in Nepali, the iBT will be offered at least several times a month, throughout the year. The most significant changes in the test will include:

• A Speaking section. Test takers will be required to respond to various questions by speaking into a microphone.
• Two essays instead of one. Unlike in the current versions of the test, essays will have to be typed, instead of hand-written.
• Candidates will be allowed to take notes throughout the entire test (currently not allowed).
• There will be no separate grammar section.

The four sections on the iBT and their score ranges are:

Paper- based TOEFL

The paper-based version of the TOEFL (PBT) was officially discontinued after the CBT was launched in 1998. However, due to the high volume of TOEFL candidates in Nepal, ETS is administrating a limited number of PBT sessions in Kathmandu in 2006 and early 2007. These sessions are temporary .Once the iBT is fully operational, both the paper-based and the computer-based TOEFL will be phased out completely. Scores on the PBT range from 200-677. Most undergraduate programs require a minimum score of 500 for admission. Graduate programs require a score of at least 550.

Score Reports

On the day of the test, you may identify up to four schools that should receive official score reports on your behalf. These scores are included in the test fee. A student copy of the score report is sent to you separately.

Score Validity

TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

Test Fee

US $140 as of 2006.

Further Information

Download the TOEFL Bulletin from the official ETS website at www.ets.org/toefl. The bulletin is in PDF format and you will need Adobe Reader to open the file .Test registration may be completed online or through local banks in Kathmandu.

TOEFL in Transition

The TOEFL is in transition and until the IBT version is fully operational in Nepal, test dates, available formats, and test center locations may change at short notice. Visit the test registration page at the ETS TOEFL website for current information on taking the TOEFL in Nepal.

The UK is fast emerging as one of the most popular study destinations for education in the world. There are numerous factors which prompt international students to pursue their education in the UK. UK education equips students with unparalleled academic and professional skills and augments their personal development with an unforgettable cultural experience.

Where ever you choose to study in the UK, you will surely have an enriching and international experience, one that will remain etched in your memory forever and will arm you with a truly global perspective.

Quality Education

The British universities are owned and funded by the UK government and are subject to rigorous quality assurance audits periodically to standardize the quality of education across all institutions throughout the UK. This means that all aspects of education being offered by institutions in the UK, be they schools, further education or higher education or research institutions, will subscribe to a certain level of quality and standard as is closely assessed by the government.

All services such as facilities available to students, quality of teaching, research funds, infrastructure, accommodation services, student support and career services are monitored according to strict quantitative assessments. This means students can have confidence in the quality of delivery when they select to study in the UK.

World Class Qualifications

Quality standards for UK institutions are among the best in the world. The British qualifications are recognised and respected throughout the world. They serve as a solid foundation for building one’s future, boosting career and prospects for a higher salary. UK universities, colleges and schools will provide a vibrant, creative, stimulating and challenging environment that gives students a chance for personal growth and to develop their potential.

International Recognition and Global Career

UK scientists and institutions have won ninety Nobel Prizes for their scientific achievements. The UK’s creative brains – artists, fashion designers, film, television and leisure software designers – are regarded as among the best in the world.

Many students will select to study in the UK because of the international recognition held by UK qualifications. This is particularly important in an increasingly globalised world economy. Employers are looking for people with appropriate knowledge, professional skills and the willingness to learn. This is an essential part of the UK teaching and learning experience and is why the qualifications are well regarded around the world.

English language skills are also important for your future career prospects as English is accepted as being the language of business, science, IT and the internet around the world. Learning English in the UK allows you to immerse yourself in the language, to live and think in English.

Range of Courses

Studying in the UK is often cheaper than in other countries due to the fact that the courses are shorter – the masters course generally are of 12 months duration as compared to 2 years in other countries and the bachelors programmes are normally of 3 years duration as compared to 4 years in other countries.

Since the duration of the courses is shorter the living expenses also tend to be lower in comparison, as the duration of stay is reduced. This also means that students can enter the employment market sooner than their peers in other countries. At the same time, mid career professionals who have returned to university to study, spend comparatively less time away from their workplace and careers, thereby helping to prevent any major dent in their overall financial status and professional growth.

Student Visa and Part Time Jobs

According to the Visa regulations, on a student visa of more that 6 months duration, you can work 20 hours a week part time and 40 hrs a week full time during vacations. The minimum wage regulation in the UK states that the minimum possible wage per hour for students working part time must be £4.50, and generally students get paid between £4 to £7 an hour depending on the nature of the job.

Although the students are allowed to work 20 hrs a week part time, they are strongly advised not to spend more that 8 to 10 hrs per week as courses in the UK are known for being very intensive.

Courses with Industry Placement

Some universities offer students an opportunity to gain industry experience as part of the course. This is particularly true on undergraduate programmes and is normally for one year between the 2nd and 3rd year of a Bachelor degree programme. However some times is may be for a shorter period and it is also available on a small number of postgraduate degree programmes. Many of the placements provide students with a salary enabling them to earn money at the same time as studying.

International Culture in Multi-cultural and Multi-faith Britain

UK offers invaluable multicultural experience for international students. Being an ethnically diverse and multi-faith country and a confluence of many cultures and communities, international students are able to adapt and assimilate admirably into the larger British culture. And this is a significant factor which ensures that all international students will we welcomed into a receptive and sensitive climate while in the UK. Today various integral aspects of international cultures and ethos are hugely popular in the UK as is clearly demonstrated by the overwhelming promotion of multi-culturalism through international cuisine, music and dress. This respect and acceptance makes the UK a perfect cultural climate to live in as an international student.
